The literacy center has three primary objectives:
1.) 70% of the students using the computerized Literacy Center will demonstrate a 25% increase on performance as scored by the pre- and post-literacy assessment instruments.
2.) 10% of the parent volunteers taking training courses will demonstrate knowledge in process writing skills by the end of the courses.
3.) 70% of parents using the Literacy Center will demonstrate a 25% increase in computer skills.
The Literacy Center is designed to improve the academic and behavioral performances of economically disadvantaged children. Staff members, students in grades K-5, and parents will be able to use the Literacy Center. It will be used daily to teach lessons using technology equipment to develop workshops for parents, and to offer special training in computer skills to community members. All areas of the program, which include teacher training and parental involvement, aim toward this goal. It introduces the idea of using specially trained teachers and clinicians to diagnose students’ and parents’ strengths and weaknesses, and to develop appropriate interventions. The program will operate four days a week in the facility located at the south end of the church’s campus. Local schools will provide referrals to the program based on low academic performance and behavioral problems. The program will accept those students scoring within the 25 percentile on the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) and/or students with identifiable behavioral problems.
Our curriculum is based on the interactive multi-sensory materials from LeapFrog Schoolhouse. This includes the LeapFrog Literacy Center and K-5 reading and math strands. All students will be administered a pre-test which will generate a learning path. Upon the completion of the learning path the child wil be adminstered a post-test which will determine growth/ advancement.
Literacy and appropriate behavior are essential for a good education. Not only are they crucial for successful completion of school and avoidance of incarceration, but they are the prerequisites for improving the quality of life of the lower-income citizen.
By assisting the schools in the Toulminville area of Mobile County with tutoring and behavioral interventions, the Literacy Centerwill reduce the impact of illiteracy and negative behavior in the academic achievements of children.
